Shut-down coolers are a specific style of air-cooled plant or air cooler.
They quickly cool down liquid media such as water, condensate or thermal oil by means of ambient
air. Similar to air-cooled condensers, shut-down coolers have only one pass on the tube side. 

In comparison to multi-pass air-cooled systems, different thermal expansions never occur in the tubing area in air-cooled systems, as all tubes bear the same amount of pressure and expand consistently in the flow direction of the medium on the tube side.
The hot medium is cooled down by ambient air, using axial fans.

In most applications, shut-down coolers operate by circulation.
This means that a particular amount of the hot medium is pumped through the cooler until it reaches the cut-off temperature necessary for the process.
After reaching this temperature, the flow of hot medium is stopped. The fans remain in operation, however, until no more radiant heat can affect them. The advantage of operating by circulation is that the systems that need to be cooled are not exposed to any abrupt changes in temperature which could lead to damage because of the enormous material tension produced.

On the one hand, shut-down coolers are used as pure air-cooled systems, helping to quickly dissipate large amounts of heat in case of emergency.
On the other hand, they are used as a shut-down system in order to cool down heating media upon completion of a discontinuous heating process.
Air-cooled systems are often designed as shut-down coolers and are initially used as coolers for reducing the temperature of bypass-flows to secure a temperature control without any long delay times. After a certain reduction in the fluid temperature,
they are used for cooling down the whole operating mass flow.
